This dissertation focuses on revealing linguistic, semiotic and cognitive properties of metamorphosis in poetic texts of the English poetry of the XIX-XXth centuries. It has been proved that linguistic properties of metamorphosis as a trope are determined by its syntactic and stylistic nature. It is established that lexico-semantic field of the predicates of metamorphosis is structured by verbs 1) with the seme "transformation", "reincarnation", 2) "revival" and 3) "change of mental and physical states". Semiotic peculiarities of metamorphosis are revealed in codes represented in nominative units of the transformative and the transformed. Cognitive - on reconstruction of concepts and conceptual metaphors and metonymies which structure the conceptual space of metamorphosis. The methodology elaborated in the dissertation made it possible to show up the functional peculiarities of metamorphosis in poetic texts of the English poetry of the XIX-XXth centuries and expose such functions of metamorphosis as: text-building, appealing, world-building, semiotic. Functional peculiarities of metamorphosis as well as semantics of verb-predicates ensure the classification of metamorphosis into metamorphosis proper, quasi-morphosis and pseudo-morphosis.
