This dissertation focuses on revealing the mechanism of establishing, maintaining and terminating speech interaction by means of metacommunicative questions in modern English dialogic discourse. Pragmatic, semantic and discursive properties of metacommunicative questions functioning at each stage of the communicative act are singled out. Typology of metacommunicative questions in English dialogic discourse with regard to the stage of communication, being either speaker- or hearer-related, is suggested. Pragmatic features of metacommunicative questions with reference to communicative strategies and tactics of the interlocutors are established.
