Essay

The object of the research is speech-behavioral acts, which contain communicative failures. The aim of the paper is to identify and describe lingua-cognitive nature of communicative failures on the methodological basis of the cognitive theory of dynamic construal of meaning. The methods of research include discourse topic identification and cognitive and discoursive interpretation as well as domain theory and frame semantics. The theoretical value is stipulated by the fact that results and findings of the paper contribute to the theory of communication and cognitive linguistics. The scientific novelty is to identify and describe lingua-cognitive nature of communicative failures on the basis of the cognitive theory of dynamic construal of meaning that enables to consider all the contextual parameters, influencing the interpretation of verbal utterances in the communicative act as constituents of communicants’ encyclopedic knowledge. In particular, the notion “communicative failure” has been grounded; the causes of communicative failures, considering lingual,lingua-cognitive and extra-lingual context of the analyzed communicative acts, have been identified; the classification of lingua-cognitive causes of communicative failures based on the subject area of cognitive structures and the degree of their conventionality has been developed. The practical value of the paper lies in the fact that its statements and results can be used in teaching stylistics, lexicology and grammar of the modern English language, general linguistics as well as special courses in cognitive semantics and communication theory.
