Essay

This thesis deals with the verbal influence upon the mass consciousness within the contemporary political discourse of the Chinese mass-media. Suggestive/infusive influence of Chinese political media is analyzed on different linguistic levels: syntactic, lexical, and graphic. The thesis touches upon most common components of suggestive / infusive influence: shifting the emphasis; accentuating or shading of the information; stimulating emotions or associations. Influencing the national world view is approached from various positions: emotional infusion (emotional and axiological lexicology); appealing to the moral and ethical sphere (universal and national values); appealing to mental attitude (clich? , stereotypes and dead metaphors); creating new cognitive structures, positive or negative associations (cognitive metaphors). The present Thesis provides linguistic analysis of psychotechnics, widely spread in Chinese political discourse. In particular, it deals with such techniques as: "Glittering generalities", "Name calling", "Plain folks", "Structuring information", "Card stacking".
