Essay

Features of salinity tolerance of brackish and saline temporary water bodies' halophilic invertebrates are explored in the dissertation: Brachionus plicatilis O. F. Muller, 1786 (Rotifera: Monogononta), Moina mongolica Daday, 1901 (Cladocera: Moinidae), Arctodiaptomus salinus Daday, 1885 (Copepoda: Calanoida), Cletocamptus retrogressus Schmankewitch, 1875 (Copepoda: Harpacticoida); Eucypris inflata Sars, 1903 (Ostracoda: Cyprididae). A comparative evaluation of the halophilic invertebrates' response to acute and chronic effects of salinity is carried out on the basis of such visual reactions: salt anabiosis, abortions of eggs, osmotic dehydration of latent eggs and fertility, sex composition of progeny, ranges of reproductive activity, the pace of population's growth, changing of the reproduction's methods. A set of criteria to determine the optimal salinity and pessimal boundaries at different stages of the halophilic invertebrates' ontogenesis is proposed. The features of osmotic dehydration of halophilic invertebrates' latent eggs are observed, and its impact to resettlement potential of resting stages is considered. Original methods of halophilic invertebrates' cultivation, receipt and storage of latent eggs for the subsequent use in mariculture and biotesting are developed. The features of invertebrate response to the action of salinity and toxicants are considered.
