Essay

This paper focuses on clarinet as a solo and ensemble instrument in compositional practice of the XXth century. It summarizes the achievements of the XVIII - XIXth centuries as to the instrument improvement as well as the classical romantic composers' contribution to its perfection which provided a basis for the clarinet music development in the XXth century.The works of the last century reflect the main tendencies of the time; they expanded the scope of imaginative content; changed the music language system and metrorythmic conditions; there appeared specific ways of sound production (slap, frullato, vibrato, glissando), multiphonics and microchromatics.
