Object - small prose by V. Stefanik and A. Chekhov. The goal - definition of typological similarities and differences of short prose V. Stefanik and A. Chekhov. Methods - typological; comparative-historical; cultural-historical; biographical; structural-semiotic. In the research specific features of the short stories within the field of literary art at the turn of the century have been defined; the relevant methodology of studying short stories and the originality of perception of the literary works by Vasyl Stefanyk and Anton Chekhov in modern literary criticism have been determined; works of prose by Vasyl Stefanyk and Anton Chekhov have been compared on the typological level. Attention focused on both type and genre elements, the stylistic tendencies, and the semantics of time-spatial coordinates of the writers' art world. Existential motives in the works by V. Stefanyk and A. Chekhov that made possible a wider revelation of the atmosphere of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries have been analyzed. Scope - learning process.
