Yeremieiev P. Old Believers of Kharkiv province (1825–1917): social structure and quantitative characteristics

The object of the research – Old Believers of Kharkiv province in 1825–1917. The dissertation purpose: the characteristic of the Old Believed population of Kharkiv province as a type of community, detection of its structure, quantitative characteristics and factors, determining their changes. The methods: methods of social history, cliometric and historical demography, historical-genetic, historical-comparative, historical-typological. Scientific novelty: in the dissertation the research of the Old Believed population of Kharkiv province as a type of community is carried out, its structure and quantitative characteristics are detected, the factors, determining their changes, are identified; the internal and external borders of the Old Belief are characterized, the mutual influence of the Old Belief and rational sectarianism in Kharkiv province is analyzed and the impact of the concealment of faith by the Old Believers on their communities’ social structure is shown; the internal changes in Old Believers’ groups in Kharkiv province are studied in the framework of “sect-church” theory and the theory of social disciplining; the factors of the changes of the quantity of registered and secret Old Believers are detected, the influence of regional and confessional features on the sex and gender characteristics of Old Believed community of Kharkiv region is demonstrated. Practical value of research: the materials of the dissertation can be used for creation of generalizing works on a history of Ukraine and Russia, history of religion and Church, during preparation of the manuals, development of study-methodical complexes on a history of religion for higher educational institutions.
