Essay

The object: 64 extant ci-poems, an autobiographical essay "Postface to a Catalogue on Bronze and Stone Inscriptions" and a theoretical essay "On Song Lyrics". The purpose: to find out the specificity of Li Qingzhao's writing style and genre concerning the main trends of Chinese literature evolution and the new ways of understanding the traditions of prose and poetry (shi and ci). The methods: historical literary, textual, genre and style analysis. In this thesis the philological analysis of all Li Qingzhao's lyrics (64 ci-poems) has been made. The theoretical and historical literary problems of developing the poetic genres shi and ci in Chinese medieval literature have been revealed. The stages of artistic development of Li Qingzhao have been traced within her genre and style searches and achievements. The role of her theoretical essay "On Song Lyrics" in the context of genre ci has been determined. The analysis of Li Qingzhao's lyric personal ci gives grounds to initiate the theoretical literary study dealing with overcoming the limits of interpretation and semantic scarcity in understanding of her works.
