The subject of the dissertation is a historiographical process of studying of the Legislative Commission on creation of a new "Code" of 1767 - 1768 in the context of the development of the historical science. The investigation of history of the Legislative Commission of 1767 - 1768 is generalized in the dissertation. The leading trends of research, which reflected the problems of the convening, activity and value of the commission, are illustrated and interpreted. The basic groups of historiographical sources are identified, systematized and characterized. Conceptual and methodical bases of the investigation of the history of the Legislative Commission of 1767 - 1768 and the most wide-spread tendencies of the formation of the knowledge on this question are explored. The scientific-theoretical and practical values of the researches are identified. A contribution of Ukrainian, Russian and foreign scientists to the researches is described. The range of problems for further investigation and scientific interpretation is denoted.
