This dissertation focuses on the research of defeated expectancy as one of the main types of foregrounding, which is embodied in semantic, temporal, and plot structure of English literary text. Defeated expectancy is defined as a complex mental phenomenon that plays an important role in building metalinks of literary text. Different forms of linguistic expression of defeated expectancy, its types and functions have been defined and investigated. Defeated expectancy is proved to be linked to the temporal structure, types of plot development and plot suspense.
