The thesis is devoted to the investigation of lexical-semantic and structural characteristics of the polysemantic phraseological units (PU), and peculiarities of PU functioning in newspaper-publicistic texts of contemporary German press. The quantitative analysis of polysemantic PU in phraseological dictionaries is done, their average length is defined, the relations between the length of polysemantic PU and the number of their meanings are distinguished. The ways of PU new meanings appearance are studied and peculiarities of the polysemantic PU structure in the modern German language are outlined.
