Essay

As a result of screening study it was detected the low iodine supplementation (median of the urinary iodine concentration 92 mg/l) and the high rate of goiter (25.9 %) in primary schoolchildren. The presence of goiter increases the chances of developing of the functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (OR=16.44). In-depth study demonstrated that reduction of functional activity of the pituitary-thyroid system increases the risk of the hypokinetic type of functional disorders of the gallbladder (OR=3.55), postprandial distress syndrome (OR=3.81), constipation (OR=26.36) with a maximum in children with subclinical hypothyroidism (OR=328.0). The decrease in serotonin production to 3.47 ng/ml, increased production of melatonin to 20.20 pmol/l, decreased production of vazoactive intestinal peptide to 5.10 pmol/l. Production of serotonin depends on the level of TSH (?=-0,32) and affects the production of melatonin (?=0,523) and vazoactive intestinal peptide (?=0,99). Medical applications of potassium iodide in children with goiter for 6 months under the conditions of high therapeutic compliance can reduce thyroid volume and decrease TSH levels, accompanied by the increasing in production of serotonin and vazoactive intestinal peptide, reduction of melatonin in serum, decreasing of clinical signs of hypokinetic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
