Kotvytska V. Semantic adaptation of Anglicism's in Present-Day German

The thesis deals with the comprehensive research of Anglicism's semantic adaptation in the modern German language. It means the semantic modification of English loanwords and their American variants in the process of their formation and functioning in German language. It was proved that at the moment of the borrowing the donor-word becomes the part of the recipient language usually in one of the meanings. In time happens the development of the loanword's new meanings with possible but not obligatory gradual semantic structure copying the donor-word. Anglicism in German and donor-word in English can have non-identical semantic structures, not the same set of seme, and therefore - different usage and interpretation. Dictionary definitions often do not provide clear understanding of the words' individual meaning limits. Except the dictionary material the context also should be taken into account for the establishment of the semantic adaptation types.The 13 types of the semantic adaptation have been specified. It was fixed that in general the changes in semantic structures of the loanwords have typical character. The majority of the specified types describe the shift of the semantic structure and at the same time the changes in the Anglicisms' seme syllables occur within seven basic subtypes. Consideration of Anglicisms' context functioning is predetermined by the necessity of a new meaning confirmation or denial that isn't fixed in dictionaries. The peculiarities of Anglicisms' use in modern German language were analyzed. It was clarified that the modefications in the Anglicisms' seme syllables meanings take place while changing the Anglicisms' semantic structure in the process of their entering German language. And these phenomena are often combined.
