Essay

The object of research is the concept FIRST LADY, instantiated in the English political mass media discourse and its subject is the lingual means of the concept primary and secondary representation. The aim is to model the radial category FIRST LADY as the base for profiling the analysed concept. Research methods include definitional analysis, cognitive-discursive interpretation, cognitive modelling and quantitative analysis. The scientific novelty of the research is accounted for by: establishing the attributes of the cluster of idealised cognitive models forming the prototype of the radial category FIRST LADY; singling out the features of the metonymic idealised cognitive model representing the category on the basis of part-whole relations; defining the character of the evolution of the prototype / ideal FIRST LADY; describing the stereotypical attributes of the members of the subcategories TRADITIONAL FIRST LADY and ALTERNATIVE FIRST LADY. The theoretical value of the work is highlighted by its results contribution to the development of cognitive-discursive studies and its relevance for the analysis of other socially important concepts instantiation. The applied value lies in the possibility to use the research results in lecture courses in Lexicology and Theoretical Grammar of the English language, in General Linguistics, as well as in special courses in Cognitive Linguistics and Discourse Studies.
