Essay

In this thesis Lutheran motet is represented as a separate kind of genre, a chain of attributes is uncovered, the most important stages of its formation is described. The biggest accent in this work is put on a research of motets of most significant romantic composers and artists of the first half of XX century, whose compositions continued the line of German motet and became an important landmark on the evolution road of the genre. Made complex analysis motets of F. Mendelssohn, R. Schumann, J. Brahms and M. Reger represents original interpretation of this traditional genre by generally recognized masters of German romantic art. Ascertainment of circumstances for composing motets, features of selection and composition of texts, specificity of music language and determination of their place in work of composers balances the general pattern of their creative work. And when these compositions are put into the context of centuries-old line of the development of the genre, it helps to restore its unity. This work is the first step in national musicology in studying spiritual creations of the most popular Lutheran composer of the first half of the XX century H. Distler.
