Essay

The dissertation examines the Ukrainian national identity as split into two substantially different forms. One of them is defined as "Ukrainian ethnocultural" ("primordial") and the other one as "Ukrainian institutional" ("territorial"). The study investigates the essential differences between them and argues that they are not only ideological but also value-based.The dychotomic identity split poses a threat of further deepening, making thereby a coexistence of two rival communities within one country virtually impossible. The dissertation argues for the urgent need to form a unifying civic identity of all Ukrainian citizens and look into the necessary preconditions for this.
