Research object: the novel by J. D. Salinger "The Catcher in the Rye" in the context of American and European literature and culture of the ХХ- ХХІ centuries. Methods of the work: historical-comparative and culturological methods, semiotic analysis; the elements of mythocriticism, principles of integral analysis of work and receptive aesthetics are used. They provide us with the basis for the complex analysis of the prose by J. D. Salinger. In the thesis an attempt to define why the novel "The Catcher in the in Rye" became the cultural and literary phenomenon was made. The presented work is the first research of the novel in the modern Ukrainian literary criticism against the background of historical, literary and cultural development of the USA in the 1950s. The well-known work was examined through the prism of cultural aspect of the epoch. The main characteristics of the artistic tendencies and their modifications in the work by Salinger were expanded and systematized. Also, an attempt to understand a great popularity of the novel and to define a new J.D. Salinger's place and role in the analysis of young people's issues in the world literature was undertaken.
