Essay

The thesis deals with the communicative and pragmatic aspect of linguistic research. It focuses on the study of communicative strategies and tactics, as well as verbal and non-verbal means the participants of the English-language professional Internet discussion forums may use to achieve their communication goals. The paper defines the English-language professional Internet discussion forum as a special virtual communicative environment, which combines the features of retial and axial communication, informative and phatic communication with the predominance of the informative one, institutional and non-institutional communication, status-oriented and personality-oriented communication. The peculiarities of the English-language professional Internet discussion forum also include: asynchronicity, the ability to be realized in the hybrid oral-written speech form, the relevance of highlighting both social-professional and virtual statuses of its participants, the polylogue form of communication, the code of netiquette to control the participants' communicative behavior, the informational and cognitive orientation of the aim of interaction, and the topic unity of discussions on forums according to the professional orientation. These peculiarities predetermine tactical and strategic behaviour of the participants of the English-language professional Internet discussion forums.
