Essay

The thesis is aimed at a complex research of the writings of Tanizaki Jun'ichiro in the context of culture-historical and literary processes of Japan at the beginning of the ХХ century, as well as at interpretation of his fiction in light of modern style and tradition as two paradigms of artistic thought. The special attention is paid to an aesthetic school tambiha as one of anti-naturalistic projects of the Japanese literature, within which Tanizaki started his literary career. The thesis examines the school's genesis and activities, briefly reviews creative experiments of the Japanese aesthetes, investigates the conceptual and literary base of the Japanese aestheticism. The research offers periodization of the literary works of Tanizaki Jun'ichiro according to the aesthetic, conceptual and literary principles, in particular it is proposed to distinguish three periods: early (1910-1924), characterized by the modern paradigm of artistic thought; traditional (1925-1955), marked with a shift to the traditional paradigm; and late (1956-1965), representing synthesis of both paradigms.
