Essay

This thesis examines the category of space and ways of its representation in Hermann Hesse's linguistic and conceptual picture of the world. It also presents the functioning of the text category of space in literary texts from the cognitive linguistics point of view. The author defines three types of the category of space in the small prose of the German writer: real (geographical) space (an objective physical world), psychological space (a mental world of thoughts and feelings) and fantastic space (an unreal world of invisible entities). Furthermore, the research systematizes linguistic means of the text category of space and its role and functions in H. Hesse's picture of the world. The study presents the analysis of language verbalization of space by means of different parts of speech (adverbs, verbs, nouns, adjectives) and different stylistic figures such as metaphor, metonymy, epithet, anaphora, epiphora. Space as the text category in Hermann Hesse's small prose integrates three parts - physical movement, mental movement, movement in the "possible worlds". Finally, the literary fairy tales of the German writer are interpreted from the perspective of possible worlds' semantics.
