This thesis focuses on the genesis and structural principles of alphabetic systems in the unrelated Ukrainian and Korean languages belonging to different grammatical types. The research deals with the main approaches to writing systems studies in European and Asian linguistic traditions, outlines the main stages in the development of the basic features inherent in the pre-alphabetic writing systems, traces the formation and development of Ukrainian and Korean alphabetic systems in the 15th – early 21st centuries. The research defines the scope of graphic and orthographic inventory in the Ukrainian and Korean writing systems, and specifies the main isomorphic and allomorphic features of the writing systems compared, which appear not only in their inner structures, but also in the ways of their functioning and development.
