Essay

The paper focuses on the analysis of the concept ECONOMIC CRISIS instantiated in the English economic discourse, its cognitive properties and their diachronic variation in the 1930s and 2000s. Methodological basis of the study employs the findings of cognitive linguistics and cognitive nomination theory. The major scientific methods are conceptual modeling, quantitative analysis. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by its results: the paper seeks to identify the pre-conceptual layer of the concept ECONOMIC CRISIS; to build up the conceptual model of the polysemy of the lexeme crisis and of the concept ECONOMIC CRISIS itself; to reveal historical constants and variables of notional-evaluative and image-evaluative components of the concept and their diachronic variations. The theoretical significance of the paper is determined by its contribution to historical linguistics, cognitive semantics, cognitive metaphor theory. The practical value of the obtained results lies in the possibility of their use in teaching courses on lexicology of the English language (themes "Lexical Semantics", "Synonymy", "Polysemy"), General Linguistics ("Language and Thought"), courses in cognitive linguistics, theory and practice of lexicography as well as in further research
