Essay

This thesis focuses on the study of the close-up technique through its artistic and stylistic effects in literary and cinematic texts. Revealing cognitive mechanisms of generating a close-up effect in the 20th–21st centuries English psychological prose and its screen adaptations, the research outlines the specificity of intersemiotic correlation of signs in close-up descriptions, while distinguishing specialized or non-specialized linguistic markers of such techniques in literary texts and respective compensatory devices in films. The paper reveals the impact of close-up on the plot development and personages’ characterization in these texts. It elicits the role of close-up in fostering narrative intimization or estrangement.
