Essay

The thesis is concerned with a study on comparative morphology, intraspecific variability and distribution of shrikes (the genus Lanius) of the fauna of Ukraine and adjacent territories. An analysis of the geographical variation of each shrike species registered in Ukraine was conducted for the first time. A number of diagnostic characters were proposed for distinguishing of the intraspecific varieties of shrikes which occur in Ukraine and neighboring areas. All the data were analysed using modern statistical software packages, which enabled providing a comprehensive morphological characterization for each species. As a result, the improved diagnoses of the species-group taxa of shrikes were generated, and their distribution records in Ukraine were summarized.
