Essay

This thesis deals with the principles of musical development in the church monody chants of the Byzantine rite. The using of thе methodology of musical semiology for church chants is motivated. The genres of heіrmоs and stіchera from Ukrainian Heirmologia are comprehensively analysed and compared with samples in neumatic notation. The continuity of the Byzantine chant tradition is observed through a combination of melodic phrases. Some common pattern of musical structure in different notations and рreservation of musical structure features during the centuries are founded.
