Goltsova M. Derivability of implicatures in the English and Ukrainian languages from the logical, pragmatic and contrastive aspects

This thesis focuses on implicatures in the English and Ukrainian languages being derived from the logical, pragmatic and comparative aspects. Five main means of the implicature creation have been analysed and the notions of the antithesis, oxymoron, antiphrastic, metaphoric and euphemistic implicature types have been defined. The logical structures of the antithesis, oxymoron, antiphrastic, metaphoric and euphemistic implicatures have been presented as logical and pragmatic models that are isomorphic in the contrasted languages under analysis. A new logical and pragmatic algorithm aimed at implicature derivability has been elaborated. The logical operations of implication, equality, negation and conjunction have been applied to derive implicatures from proverbs, sayings, idioms, ironic set-comparisons, phraseological metaphors and euphemisms in the English and Ukrainian languages.
