Honchar O. Efficacy of the nitric oxide donor use in treatment of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma

Object: primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Purpose:to increase the effectiveness of primary open angle glaucoma treatment with nitric oxide donor (L-arginine), by studying its effect on certain parameters of nitric oxide metabolism and functional and structural dynamics of changes of the optic nerve and retina. Methods: ophthalmological; biochemical; statistics; ophthalmoscope; slit lamp; computer perimeter; optical coherence tomography. The scientific data about the factors contributing to the progression of POAG has been refined. For the first time, the differences in factors contributing to rapid and slow progression of POAG have been established. The scientific data on changes in the retinal ganglion cells in the macular region with POAG has been refined. For the first time, the nature of the effect of L-arginine on the levels of S-nitrosothiols, endothelin-1, the activity of inducible and endothelial NO-synthase in patients with POAG has been studied. A method for the treatment of patients with POAG with L-arginine has been proposed and the timing of repeated courses of treatment has been established. The results of research have been implemented in "Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital - Center for emergency medical care and disaster medicine" and "L. L. Hirschman Kharkiv City Clinical Hospital №14", the main results are included to the program of lectures and practical training in departments of ophthalmology in KNMU and KMAPE.
