Essay

The thesis suggests a new integrated approach to the study of cognitive onomasiological and semasiological aspects of ichthyonyms motivation in the English, French and Ukrainian languages. The research reconstructs the original motivation of the key lexemes fish / poisson / риба and reveals the common and different in four inner motivational types of ichthyonyms in mentioned languages (propositional, associative-terminal, modus-related, mixed) and their nine varieties. Structural types of English, French and Ukrainian fish names have been defined. The mechanism of transfer of fish names onto other lexical domains has been reconstructed. The national and cultural symbols of idioms containing ichthyonyms have been identified in mentioned languages.
