Current state and methods of democracy principle research have been established. Different viewpoints as to understanding of the democracy principle in law, its characteristic and specific features, fields of application etc have been put forward. A philosophical and legal analysis of the history and development of the ideas of democracy as an ontological foundation of democracy principle in law has been conducted. The notion and fundamental principles of democracy have been discussed. The link between democracy, civil society, state of law, law and common human values has been established. Philosophical and legal understanding of democracy as a principle of law has been analyzed.
