This thesis focuses on the study of somaticon of the character’s emotional response in English fictional discourse, viewed from nominative and pragmatic perspectives. The paper clarifies the notion of "somaticon of emotional response" in current linguistic studies, applies a comprehensive modular methodology to the investigation of personage response and offers a typology of somaticon modules. The research reveals nominative features of the somaticon under analysis, identifies its emotional potential in English fictional discourse. The dissertation highlights the pragmatic value of somaticon in terms of emotional competence. It also singles out the factors that influence the character’s communicative style of emotional response with regard to manifestations of somaticon.
