Essay

The dissertation is dedicated to the investigation of the kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) pods extract impact on metabolic reactions of the organism under the development of streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes in rats. It was shown that long-term administration of the extract increased tissue tolerance to glucose and also revealed a marked hypoglycemic effect that was not associated with its insulinotropic properties in rats with type 1 diabetes. Administration of P. vulgaris pods extract led to an increase of glucose utilization by isolated hemidiaphragm as well as total content GLUT-4 in muscle tissue of rats. The use of studied extract led to an increase of glycogen synthase activity in rat muscle and hexokinase activity in rat liver under the conditions of type 1 diabetes. This indicates the possible direct effect of P. vulgaris phytoconstituents on the insulin-dependent processes in hormone-target tissues under the conditions of the disorders of insulin production by pancreas beta-cells under the type 1 diabetes. Administration of P. vulgaris pods extract for 28 days to rats with type 1 diabetes led to an improvement of the antioxidant system state and has the beneficial effects on immune processes. Keywords: type 1 diabetes, dry extract, Phaseolus vulgaris, carbohydrate metabolism, oxidative stress, immune processes.
