Skrypnyk Y. Prevention features of basic dental diseases of children with mental retardation

The features of prevention of common dental diseases in children with mental retardation have been researched at the dissertation The examination of 220 children with a mental retardation (5 to 18 years) have revealed massive prevalence of caries among deciduous teeth. It has been proved that the III levels of caries activity prevailed among children aged 5-6 years old with mental retardation. It has been accompanied with dysbiosis of oral cavity and changes of mineralization ability of oral fluid. The main periodontal pathology which were diagnosted was chronic catarrhal gingivitis (76.9 %). Malocclusion were diagnosed in 67.7% of the examined children. Developed a reasonable program of hygiene education and training which was aimed at the prevention of major dental diseases among children with mental retardation. The program consists of several stages: an informational stage, a stage of professional actions, a forming of hygiene skills, recommendations, a stage of preventive measures, which included the introduction of health-care complex. Evaluating of the effectiveness of our program was given with an according to WHO recommendations and was made by three consecutive stages - close, intermediate and distant. The high efficiency of the proposed health-care complex was confirmed by clinical and laboratory studies within 24 months. Reduction of caries of permanent teeth in 24 months of observation was 82.6 %.
