Essay

The object: the short story by Olha Kobylyanska "Valse melanсolique" (1894), the play by Volodymyr Vynnychenko "The Black Panther and the Polar Bear" (1911), the novels by Oscar Wilde "The Picture of Dorian Grey" (1890) and by Somerset Maugham "The Moon and Sixpence" (1919), some elements of literary and artistic context. The aim: the study of the typological peculiarities of form and content actualization of the image of an artist in the art discourse of Ukrainian and English literature of the late 19th - early 20th century. The methods of research: comparative-historical (contact and genetic), comparative-typological (contrastive), contextual, biographical methods of research, which are supplemented by the contemporary achievements of the theory of art synthesis. The results, novelty: the comparatively-typological investigation of the image of an artist in the works by Olha Kobylyanska "Valse melanсolique", Volodymyr Vynnychenko "The Black Panther and the Polar Bear", Oscar Wilde "The Picture of Dorian Grey", Somerset Maugham "The Moon and Sixpence" has been made in the context of historic and literary processes in Ukraine and Great Britain at the turn of the centuries; the cultural and historic, world-view and thematic factors of art discourse in the paradigm of Ukrainian and English modernism have been systematized. The image of an artist in a literary work has been considered as an important factor of literature and art interrelation; the peculiarities of its actualization on the levels of idea and theme, plot and contexture, language and style have been explored. The elements of "painting with words" in the texts of Ukrainian and English authors have been separated; the functions of the pictures integrated into the plot of the works have been revealed. The area of use: the courses in the history of the Ukrainian and English literature of the late 19th - early 20th century.
