Essay

This dissertation focuses on revealing linguistic, semiotic and cognitive features of similes in English poetic texts of Canadian poetry. Simile is viewed as a multifunctional linguistic and semiotic construal representing verbal patterns of form and semantic function. Cognitive peculiarities are defined via reconstruction of concepts and conceptual metaphors, while semiotic peculiarities are clarified via identification of cultural codes and word-symbols which are represented in subjective and objective parts of similes. Identification of functional peculiarities of similes in English poetic texts of Canadian poetry made it possible to expose intersemiotic, intertextual and world-building functions of similes. Key words: cognitive and semiotic operation of comparison, simile, iconic simile, indexical simile, symbolic simile.
