Essay

Thіs dissertation deals with diachronic analysis of manner adverbials in Old English texts. The functional semantic field of manner adverbials is represented by units of different levels forming four structural types, which develop into fourteen structural variants. Thirteen semantic classes range from primitive manner adverbials through seven nominative semantic groups and two periphrastic classes to four comparative manner adverbial groups. The paper reveals the combinability of manner adverbials with the verb, which is realized in accordance with the verificative parameters, prompted by the semantics of the verb class which make the basis for the elaboration of the frame net. The distribution of manner adverbials within a sentence is governed by two basic models: AV and VA. Quantitative and qualitative changes within the manner adverbial classes in the texts of different genres and time periods testify to the enlargement of the number of manner adverbials and diversification of their semantic classes in Old English.
