Essay

A comprehensive study of the compliment as a speech act regarding its language pragmatics and evolution in the texts of German drama of the 18th-20th cc. was undertaken. Theoretical basis of studying compliment was formulated, the compliment definition was explicated and the conditions for its implementation were singled out. Communicative intentions of the speaker and their evolution during the 18th-20th cc. were investigated. The functions, thematic-sense features of the compliment, responses to compliments in the dramatic works were identified and the dynamics of their changes was traced.
