Essay

This study is the first comprehensive investigation of the reception of twentieth-century Polish prose in Ukraine. Literary works by Andrzej Bobkowski ("Pen Sketches"), Tadeusz Borowski ("We Were in Auschwitz"), Witold Gombrowicz ("Diary", "Ferdydurke"), Tadeusz Konwicki ("A Minor Apocalypse"), Czeslaw Milosz ("The Captive Mind", "Native Realm"), Andrzej Stasiuk ("Across the river", excerpts published in Y. Andrukhovych's book "My Europe", "Fado") and Gustaw Herling-Grudzinski ("A World Apart. The Journal of a Gulag Survivor") have played a crucial role in the national life of the Poles and have influenced Polish culture and world-views over the past decades. In addition, this study takes account of texts by Polish historians, art historians, literary scholars and philosophers (B. Bakula, S. Beres, G. Dziamski, L. Kolakowski, J. Kurol, A. Mencwel, A. Michnik, P. Czaplilski, P. Sliwinski, D. Sosnowska, M. Janion et al.), as their philosophical observations, which became available in translation in the pages of serious Ukrainian periodicals ("Dukh i Litera", "Ji", "Krytyka", "Potyag 76", "Suchasnist" et al.), complement the overall representation of Polish culture in Ukraine. Also examined is the role of diaspora Ukrainians, centered around Jerzy Giedroyc's magazine "Kultura", in the analyzing and elucidating works by Polish writers.
