This thesis investigates the semantics and functions of present and past participlesin present-day Dutch. The paper offers a comprehensive research methodology that includes the combination of the descriptive method with specific techniques of the distributive, contextual, transformational and component analysis. The study of structural and semantic features of Dutch participles focuses at explication and correlation between resultative and processual meanings of the past participle and adjectival and verbal features of the present participle. The dissertation outlines the principles that underlie the functioning of participles in the noun phrase in Dutch in the light of the theory of reference and reveals the correlation between the semantics of participles, syntactic position and referential status of the noun phrase, and the type of referential aid that precedes the noun phrase.
