Essay

The study focuses on discourse-pragmatic features of specific lexical bundles as etiquette devices in the American pre-scholarly discourse. Lexical etiquette bundles are defined as fixed communication units reproducible in typical communicative situations with the aim to improve the interaction. They have four major characteristics that distinguish them from other kinds of lexical bundles: 1) recurrent reproduction in speech in typical contexts; 2) specific functional and pragmatic features; 3) conventionality, i.e. the compliance with the rules of social interaction in a particular culture, specificity for a certain type of discourse and situation; 4) relative fixedness caused by limited variability of language structure. Pre-scholarly discourse is the process and the result of communicative interaction in higher education to transfer professional knowledge, to lay the methodology foundations of understanding reality and training highly qualified specialists. It is also a special type of interpersonal interaction between the addresser and the addressee, with the sender affecting the recipient's cognition to form the foundations of the system of professional knowledge and professional thinking. Lexical etiquette bundles function in phatic, organizing, informative, stimulating and evaluative discourse acts depending on communicative intentions of the participants of pre-scholarly discourse. Such etiquette bundles help to facilitate phatic discourse acts. They fulfill the function of establishing, maintaining and breaking a contact. Organizing discourse acts are realized via lexical etiquette bundles denoting topic and subtopic, order of structural parts, developing the ideas, and summarizing the information. They provide structural organization of the discourse, and contribute to its gradual development. Informative discourse acts are aimed at optimizing information perception: its actualization, exemplification, and contrast by means of such etiquette bundles. Stimulating discourse acts express the will of the addresser for the other communicator to perform certain actions.
