Essay

The change in the phase state of crystals possessing an incommensurate superstructure depending on their linear dimensions is studied in current dissertation. It is found that size effects observed in these crystals are due to the commensurability of the surface energy to the energy of the incommensurate structure. The comprehensive studies of dielectric thin-layer [N(CH3)4]2MeCl4 crystals with incommensurate phases are aimed at finding out the patterns of the manifestation of size effects in their optical properties. The efficiency of creating crystalline structures for obtaining ferroelectrics with unique physical properties has been demonstrated.
