Essay

The dissertation is devoted to C. Saint-Saens’s instrumental concertos in the context of French genre tradition in 19th and early 20th century. Research material is formed by five piano concertos (1858, 1868, 1869, 1875, 1896), three violin concertos (1857–1858, 1859, 1880) and two cello concertos (1872, 1902) of the author. This choice is motivated by the intention to discover genre particular qualities of concertos in the light of composer’s aesthetics. In order to understand C. Saint-Saens’s role in development of the French instrumental concerto the study contains genre examples which belong to 16 authors, including E. Lalo, B. Godar, Ch. Widor, T. Dubois and others.
