Essay

The object of the research is phonetic and lexical peculiarities of Pittsburgh Speech. The subject of the research is the impact of non-language factors on Pittsburgh Speech variation namely gender, ethnic affiliation, social status and age. The aim of the research is to identify the patterns of variation of Pittsburgh Speech's lexical units in accordance with the influence of extra-lingual factors on their functioning. Methodology of research includes various methods and approaches: survey, auditive analysis done by auditors-native speakers and auditors-phonetists, quantitative research. The academic novelty of the research consists in ecolinguistic approach to the sociolinguistic differentiation of Pittsburgh Speech materials that contains phonetic and lexical analysis. The theoretical significance consists in the further development of theoretical aspects for functioning of the territorial and social forms of the language within the framework of the broad ecological approach (influence of the social factor and the interaction with the other languages). The practical value is determined by the ability to use its guidelines, the obtained results and conclusions in the course of theoretical and practical phonetics, lexicology of Modern English, sociolinguistics.
