Essay

The thesis presents for the first time in the domestic and foreign scholarly research the complex historiographic study of the studentstvo (the studentry) in the sociopolitical life of Dnieper Ukraine in the second half of the XIXth - beginning of the XXth century. The paper outlines and analyses three historiographic stages of the scholar research: pre-revolutionary (1860-1917), Soviet (1920-1991) and modern stage (1991-2017). Within these stages the following seven substages were singled out: 1860-1905; 1905-1917; 1920s; beginning of 1930 - end of 1950; 1960-1980; 1991-2004; 2005-2017). It is proved that the research of the studentstvo of Dnieper Ukraine at the modern stage is characterized by the qualitative and quantitative enrichment of the historical knowledge towards its social sphere, it helped to review the Soviet interpretation of the studentstvo's peculiarities, to improve the political part of the student movement as well as to overcome the one-sided representation of issues, to deepen knowledge of its backgrounds and reasons. The study introduces the peculiarities of the purely historiographic research of the Dnieper Ukrainian studentstvo, which depict the main tendencies of the world and Ukrainian historical thought in the interpretation of sociopolitical historical issues in the Russian Empire in general as well as in Dnieper Ukraine in particular. In the process of research the body of sources was established. It is stated that at the end of the XXth - at the beginning of the XXIst century the historiographic sources on the topic were systematic enriched by the attraction of the new documents and materials into the particular historical studies of its certain aspects, the laws and regulations' publications of the educational process organisation in certain universities of Dnieper Ukraine, memoirs of the faculty and students themselves. The paper characterizes the main theoretic-and-methodological grounds of the issue examination, defines historiographic and methodological essence of the notion "student movement". The study introduces the historiographic representation peculiarities of the studentstvo as certain social group in Russian Empire and particularly in Dnieper Ukraine in the second half of the XIXth - beginning of the XXth century. It focuses on the phenomenon of the particular Ukrainian student movement in the second half of the XIXth - at beginning of the XXth century, represented through interweaving, interaction and manifestation of that part of intelligentsia at the time as a participant in the educational, social and nation-building processes. The thesis outlines the historical reconstruction peculiarities of significant formation features of the particular Ukrainian worldview of Dnieper Ukrainian students - romantic tendencies of the nineteenth century, the notion of the so-called "Ukrainophilia", the khlopomany movement, the hromada movement, ethno-cultural peculiarities of the university environment in Dnieper Ukraine, "council" tendencies in the relations between the students of higher educational institutions in Ukrainian lands, that was ruled by two totally different empires. The study implies the peculiarities of historiographic interpretation in the second half of the XIXth - beginning of the XXth century of the role of Dnieper Ukrainian educated youth in common democratic movements in Russian Empire: the spread of social democratic ideas among the student environment in Dnieper Ukraine, the place of particularly Dnieper Ukrainian students in the revolutionary events of the early XXth century, sociopolitical position of students of other nationalities, key moments of their participation in the public-political life in the second half of the XIXth - at the beginning of the XXth century. The paper outlines on the basis of present studies the insufficiently researched aspects and defines the key issues to be further developed.
