Essay

For the first time in Ukrainian literary studies, this dissertation presents a comprehensive analysis of display of a human being and his place in modern science fiction, it also sets forth a typology of human being representations in science fiction. Works of science-fiction writers at the turn of XXIst century (T. Chan, S. Lukianenko, H. Rajaniemi, G. Egan, Yu. Nikitin, M. and S. Diachenko, M. Reznik and L. Robin, V. Kuzmenko) are the subject of inquiry. Science fiction is a kind of artistic fiction, in which fantastic element, which is determinative for the structure of a work, is argued with help of artistically simulated scientific discoveries or technological inventions. Science fiction is focused on human being, who develops oneself through ideological and thematic structure of a work, author 20 and characters, sociocultural circumstances, and nature. Human being display characteristics in abovementioned aspects may be described in terms of mental and axiological, moral and psychological measurements and physicality. Engineering is one of fundamental categories comprehended by science fiction. Based on authors’ attitude to engineering two approaches may be separated: against engineering, according to which science and engineering are described as the source of disasters and catastrophes, and pro-engineering, according to which engineering is seen as a promise of a better future.
