Essay

The object of the research is the novel by Mary Shelley "Frankenstein: Or, the modern Prometheus" and variants of its interpretation in culture (theatrical and cinema interpretations) and literature of the XXth and the beginning of the XXIst century. The purpose is to analyze the most prominent interpretations of the myth of Frankenstein in literature and other media discourses (theater, cinema of the XXth and the beginning of the XXIst century), which contributed to the creation of new content and features of the famous work of Mary Shelley; another purpose is to identify the specific features and factors of the dynamics of the mythologization of the story and image of Frankenstein in the literature and culture of the XX-XXI centuries. Such methods of research as a literary-historical approach, a hermeneutic approach, a comparative-typological approach and a myth-poetic approach were used. The study is undertaken to explore the process of mythologization of the literary hero, the factors that contribute to his archetypization when the image goes beyond one particular literary work and becomes a significant part of literature and other arts in general. The result of this process, in the case of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, is the acquisition of the status of a cultural hero in the XXth and early XXIst centuries, as well as the emergence of the "myth of Frankenstein" with its numerous variants in literature, theatre, and cinema. It is noted that the high semantic potential of the novel "Frankenstein: Or, the modern Prometheus" and its images allowed to adapt the novel to any era, to design its "eternal" problems for each new generation of people: this is the main reason why the writers and other men of art from different countries and epochs continue appealing to the novel. The study can be applied in the field of the educational process.
