Essay

The thesis focuses on the study of structural and functional properties of subject raising construction (SRC) in the English language of the 12th -17th centuries. It reveals the causes and ways of SRC formation, deals with peculiarities of seem-type raising verbs development in Middle English and Early Modern English based on the processes of detransitivation and subjectification. The study of structural and functional features of SRC including data from different periods of its development is carried out from the standpoint of generative grammar, in particular, on the basis of X-bar theory, which serves as a powerful tool to explain the changes that occur while forming new lingual categories.
