Thesis offers a new approach to communicative, structural and semantic organization of phatic speech acts in the English language and the Ukrainian language based on the materials of the dramatic texts of XIX-XX centuries. The interrelation between the notions "phatics", "phatic metacommunication", "phatic communication" and "phatic speech" has been defined. The complex methodology of comparison of phatic speech acts in the English language and the Ukrainian language has been developed. Three types of phatic speech acts according to the communicative function have been identified: phatic speech acts of contact initiation, contact prolongation and contact termination. Phatic speech acts of contact initiation and phatic speech acts of contact termination have been classified according to the structural organization; the semantic taxonomies of these two types have been developed. The semantic organization of phatic speech acts of contact prolongation in both languages has been presented. Common characteristics and cultural and national differences in communicative and structure-semantic organization of phatic speech acts in the English language and the Ukrainian language have been defined.
