Essay

The thesis suggests a new approach to contrastive typological study of English and Ukrainian language cliches as the units of cognition, culture and discourse. The definition of language cliches as of signs which appear in the result of semiotization, their peculiarities and differences between similar terms and concepts are clarified. Cognitive mechanisms of signs symmetry / asymmetry of English and Ukrainian language cliches in structure, meaning and function are disclosed; nominative and communicative language cliches are revealed with the help of structural-typological parameters, on the basis of which cliches are characterized as the components of etiquette and ritualized forms of compared cultures in contact; the discourse taxonomy of English and Ukrainian language cliches is made and their variability on synonymic and antonymic levels of the language systems is determined. Common and contrastive tendencies in the processes of cognitive, cultural and discursive semiotization of English and Ukrainian language cliches are established
