The research is based on Arabic geographical treatises of the 9–15th centuries, accounts by European travelers of the 13th century, report by the Dutch author of the 17th century H. Hamel, works by Jesuits and European officials working in the 16–18th centuries in Japan and China, literary texts of the Age of Enlightenment, factual travel writings of the end of the 18th – the beginning of the 20th century, fiction by J. London, W. Sieroszewski, British and American missionaries of the beginning of the 20th century. The thesis presents the overview of the terminology and methodological framework of imagological studies, the characteristics of the typological features of travel literature and the verification of travel literature's imagological potential. The construction of the hetero-image of Korea in travel literature discourse was determined by the influence of political ideology, scientific paradigm, philosophic thought, literary movements of different periods.
